What follows are some observations and questions that emerged for us after the Visible Evidence 26 workshop on “Beyond Story: Situating an Online Community Manifesto,” led by Alexandra Juhasz, co-author of the “Beyond Story Manifesto.”
-What role does story play in a politics of pleasure in documentary spectatorship?
-Thinking about forms that are othered in the championing of story. Eg., substituting one compromised form for another- cultish baggage of story substitutes
-What are the affordances of story as a tool? For forwarding profit and/or political change?
-If we were better at articulating what we need a tool for, would we be better at knowing what documentary (and story marshaled under its aegis) can and can’t do?
